Visit to the Gasthuismuseum of Geel

Push open the door to a place where care, history and stories meet

In the heart of Geel, the Gasthuismuseum is a unique heritage site where two exceptional stories intertwine: daily life in the former hospice and the legend of Saint Dimpna, patron saint of the mentally ill.

On this magnificently preserved convent site, you can step back in time to the 17th century. Here you will meet the Augustinian nuns of the hospice, who for many years cared for the sick and travellers. In their authentic living and working spaces, you will discover how a warm bed, a good meal and prayer formed the basis of their hospitality.

But the story doesn’t end there. The hospice was built on a legendary site linked to the life of Saint Dimpna. Immerse yourself in the centuries-old cult dedicated to this singular saint and discover how Geel became the City of Mercy, renowned the world over for its family-style care for the mentally ill.

The unique collection, ranging from furniture and medical objects to archives, photos and relics from the Dimpna legend, brings these stories to life where they happened.

For curious visitors and budding detectives, there are also fun activities on offer: solve themuseum’s detective mystery or go exploring with the “I see… I see…” photo trail game. Ideal for families, groups of friends or little adventurers.

The Gasthuismuseum welcomes you on your journey of discovery, and will give you a warm welcome in a friendly atmosphere.
