Located in one of the most beautiful valleys in Wallonia, occupied by virtually every culture in prehistory, the Goyet caves have yielded archaeological material of a quantity and quality that make them one of the major archaeological sites in Belgium and Europe.
Ice Age animals, prehistoric dogs, Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons have all left their mark here. Some of Belgium’s most important prehistoric works of art have been discovered here.
Numerous excavation campaigns have been carried out here, from E. Dupont in the 19th century to Michel Toussaint at the end of the 20th century. These early digs yielded some real prehistoric treasures, including the famous dog skull, a flute, an engraved psammite plate, a pierced stick, Neanderthal bones with cut marks, etc. Although these objects were not collected using modern archaeological techniques, they have not been lost. More than a century after their discovery, they are still being analysed in depth. The Grottes de Goyet are now at the heart of scientific research into prehistory.
Your guide will meet you at the bottom of the Grottes staircase to begin a unique adventure. The experience begins with an observation of the landscape before moving on to the seven galleries, where you will discover the history of the people and animals that have occupied the site. The tour ends with the sound of Goyet’s famous prehistoric flute.
